Which Chemical Peel Is Right for You?
No two people have the same skin type or goals for improving their appearance. Medically administered skin peels on the face and other areas are used to reduce a wide range of blemishes. In some cases, a simple refreshing of the skin’s surface is needed. In other cases, chemical peels are used to reduce or eliminate acne scars, uneven facial pigmentation, sun-damaged skin, rosacea, fine lines, and facial blemishes. No single treatment or product can handle the full range of problems, safely and effectively. That’s why the licensed, experienced medical professionals at our MediSpa and skin care clinic in Wayzata always do a complete skin analysis and consultation with every client we serve. Only after that assessment and a thorough discussion about goals and expectations can a treatment plan be created that exactly suits each patient.
Many factors affect the choice of what type of cosmetic peel product will be used, how many treatments will be needed, and what strength of product is required. Skin type and the age of the client are factors, as are the extent of the problem to be corrected and the desired results. At our medically supervised clinic, our professional skin care team can choose from several products, each of which can be used in multiple ways. We offer cosmetic facial and other peels, using Obaji Blue Peel, Vitalize Peel by SkinMedica and RESERFACE products. All are only available through medical professionals like those at our Minneapolis area clinic and medical spa. Every treatment plan is customized for each client, and may fall into the following types:
-
Light Chemical Peels Are Ideal for Refreshing Skin Appearance
Requiring minimal recovery time, light facial peels can reduce fine lines, skin dryness, mild acne marks and minor uneven pigmentation. Using a mild acid formulation, these peels can be used even on darker skin tones and delicate skin to rejuvenate and resurface lightly damaged skin. Sometimes called glycolic peels, they use a mixture of alpha-hydroxy acids in a mild concentration, and are applied for only a brief period. Acting primarily on the outer epidermal area, they are well-tolerated by almost everyone and require only a brief recovery time. Patients can return to normal activities immediately, with only minor, temporary skin redness. A light peel takes less than an hour and is a terrific way to refresh the facial skin appearance and improve skin tone, texture and pigmentation. Achieving optimal results may require additional treatments at intervals.

Medium Facial Peels Correct More Deeply-Seated Problems
If your goals are to further reduce the appearance of fine lines, acne scarring, sun-damage skin and other issues that affect more than the superficial epidermal layer of skin, our medical skin care specialist may recommend a medium peel procedure. Acting on problems that affect those deeper layers, these peels, which use a stronger formulation and different combinations of chemical ingredients, are selected and applied only after a thorough analysis and consultation with you. They can be used on selected areas, if needed, to treat specific issues. Following the treatment, which is carefully planned using specific concentrations and timing to match your needs, you will experience some superficial crusting, which flakes off in less than a week. Some redness may appear, as well, which will soon fade, leaving you with a fresh new look and dramatically improved skin tone, texture and coloration. As with all chemical peels, multiple treatments over time may be required to meet your goals. Our medical skin care specialists will discuss all aspects of your treatment plan with you, including aftercare precautions. Some of our clients schedule a short time off from their regular schedule during the healing period.

Deep Chemical Peels Are Used Only for Significantly Damaged Skin
For patients with coarse facial wrinkles, seriously sun-damaged, blotchy pigmentation changes, and for certain other skin conditions, a deep chemical peel may be the best approach. They produce the most dramatic effects, but also have the longest recovery time and can seriously affect overall skin coloration. They are best suited for fair-skinned patients and are usually not recommended for people with darker skin or for partial treatment of facial areas. After a deep chemical peel, most patients take time off work for recovery, since redness and swelling are often experienced and may take some time to fade. The powerful rejuvenation results of these deep peels, however, often make the time and discomfort of recovery very worthwhile for many people. Before recommending a deep facial peel, our medical professionals will carefully evaluate you and provide you with complete information on the procedure, including detailed instructions for aftercare.
