Photo Facial, An Alternative to Chemical Peels
When clients come to our Twin Cities medical spa for treatment of age spots, acne and sun-damaged skin, they’re typically concerned about pigmented areas of their skin that affect their appearance. Often, they expect us to recommend microdermabrasion or chemical peels to treat these conditions. While those procedures are often an available option, we often suggest that those clients consider a less invasive option. We offer Palomar pulsed light Photo Facial treatments, sometimes called Fotofacial or laser treatments. Using highly advanced pulsed light optical technology, we can treat several common conditions with no pain and no recovery period at a very affordable low cost. During our free consultation with each client at our medical spa in Minneapolis St Paul metro, we’ll discuss every option and provide accurate information on the effectiveness, cost and process for each option. Photofacial treatments are particularly effective for the following conditions:
-
Pigmented Facial Lesions
The sun can cause many pigmentation problems, particularly on facial skin. Since our faces are almost always exposed to the sun when we are outdoors, pigmented lesions are a common concern for our clients. Age spots, liver spots and sun spots are common names for these lesions, which can occur on the face, hands, arms and elsewhere. When we’re young, those sun-exposure discolorations often disappear on their own, but as the years pass, they tend to become more frequent and long-lasting. Another similar condition, actinic bronzing, can discolor even larger areas of skin. Photo Facial treatments are very effective in reducing the appearance of, or even eliminating, such conditions.
-
Vascular Lesions on the Face
When tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin appear visibly, they can be a concern for many people. Age is a factor in the prominence of these tiny veins. Inflammation, Rosacea and spider veins often result in visible lesions that can cause redness and blotch skin which interferes with the youthful, healthy look we all want. Photo Facial treatments can be very effective in reducing the appearance of such lesions and restoring fresh-looking skin.
-
Fine Lines, Wrinkles and Acne
The same treatments are also effective for some other skin conditions, such as fine lines, wrinkles and even acne for some patients. These conditions, which are often treated with chemical peels or microdermabrasion, can respond well to the high-intensity light used for Fotofacial or laser treatments. After a careful evaluation of your skin and the actual problems you’re experiencing, the medical professional at our skin care clinic will suggest the treatment that is best for you and that will provide the results you are seeking within your budget.

Photofacial Procedure
Even though people often refer to these treatments as “laser” procedures, no lasers are used. Instead, after a gentle cleansing of the skin, a wand-like applicator is guided over the affected area by an experienced clinician. Powerful bursts of light from our Palomar StarLux console are directed at the lesions. You may feel a slight snapping sensation with each burst, but there’s no pain. The entire treatment takes only a brief time, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Afterwards, pigmented lesions may darken somewhat, and vascular lesions will lighten or turn gray. Then, over the next two weeks or so, your body’s own healing processes will cause the lesions to disappear or fade. The treatment can be repeated until the desired results are achieved. The number of treatments required will depend on your unique skin and conditions.
